Thank You!

Nearly a year ago, I wrote to you to highlight the upcoming activities for the PRSA Houston Chapter. I mentioned our board of directors would be committed to focusing on you – our members. We pledged to drive forward PRSA’s priorities of advancing professional excellence, diversity and ethics within the PR profession. I also stressed in conversations with many of you that we’d have fun along the way!

I am happy to report we delivered on our promises and exceeded expectations for our organization. Throughout 2019, we provided quality programming for members at all career levels. We hosted 22 events throughout the greater Houston area and revamped our annual Excalibur Awards Gala, infusing the 34thannual celebration with a lively, youthful vibe and dancing robot! At the regional level, we hosted the PRSA Southwest District Conference – LAUNCH – in downtown Houston. We welcomed communications professionals from across Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma for three days of professional development and networking. Thank you to NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman for serving as our keynote speaker!

At the national level, our chapter was represented at the PRSA International Conference, Leadership Rally and Assembly in San Diego. During the conference, the PRSA National Diversity and Inclusion Committee presented us with a third-place award for our Diversity and Inclusion Program. The award recognizes chapters that embody and demonstrate key values in diversity, in addition to advancing industry diversity and inclusion. I’m proud of all of our efforts to ensure a welcoming society for all!

This year has truly been a banner year for our 69-year-old organization. We’re ending 2019 with a 12 percent increase in membership, more than $51,000 in combined sponsorships (does not to include in-kind services) and a renewed energy that will carry on into the New Year. We've improved our communications platforms and social media channels to help you stay connected with us. We added 848 new members on LinkedIn alone. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter: @PRSAHouston.

Thank you to the board of directors for supporting my vision this past year. Your behind-the-scenes work provided a solid foundation for our organization to thrive. A special thank you to President-Elect Jessica Anderson, Vice President Meagan Coughlin, APR, and Treasurer Justin Lacey for their unwavering support and reading all of my late-night emails. I’d also like to thank our Southwest District Conference Committee Chair Amy Lach and Excalibur Awards Chairs Misha McClure and Sybil Sanchez for leading two of our flagship programs. Your leadership and enthusiasm ensured two quality events and cemented our reputation as the premier communications organization for public relations professionals in Houston.

I’d like to thank our Chapter Administrator Maureen Maiuri of Manifest Creative for six years of service to PRSA Houston. I’d also like to welcome Logan Beszterda and Reagan Porter of Association Management Consultants (AMC) as our new chapter administrators. AMC was chosen after a thorough selection process and will take the reins beginning Jan. 1. Please be sure to welcome them at our first meeting on Jan. 16 at Maggiano’s Little Italy.

Serving as president of PRSA Houston has certainly been a career highlight for me! Thanks to PRSA Austin President Amelia Folkes, APR, for her friendship throughout the past year, PRSA Dallas President Brooke Traister, APR, for her willingness to share ideas and to all the chapter presidents in the Southwest District who stood with Houston when we challenged the 2020 election slate and nomination process. PRSA Houston took a principled stance during the nomination process and held the district’s officers accountable in order to ensure a strengthened society. My thanks to the Austin, Baton Rouge, Dallas, Greater Fort Worth, New Mexico, San Antonio chapters for their support. We will continue to keep a watchful eye on all district operations throughout the next year.
